Trevignano and Lake Bracciano: the answers

It's one of the few villages on Lake Bracciano with an intact medieval centre directly on the lakeshore. Unlike Bracciano and Anguillara, it keeps a quiet, authentic atmosphere with lake-fish restaurants, free beaches and a pedestrian lake promenade.

For a taste, 2 days (a weekend) are enough. To also visit the Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, kayak/SUP, take a day trip to Rome or Viterbo and enjoy the restaurants, 3-4 days are ideal.

Yes. Lake Bracciano is one of the cleanest lakes in Europe (it's part of Rome's drinking-water reserve) and holds a Blue Flag. The best swimmable beaches are Trevignano, Vigna di Valle and Lido di Bracciano. Season: May–September.

By car, 30-40 minutes via the SS2 Cassia or SS493 Braccianese. By train, the FL3 Rome Ostiense–Viterbo line stops at Bracciano and Anguillara, with a connecting bus to Trevignano. From Fiumicino airport about 50 minutes by car.

The speciality is lake fish: whitefish, perch, pike, eel. Marinated fish (anchovies, latterini) is also traditional. Vegetables from local gardens and cardoons are common sides. Try our restaurants guide.

The three most famous: the Feast of San Bernardino (20 May, patron saint) with procession and fireworks on the lake; the Feast of the Assumption (15 August) with the historic nighttime procession of illuminated boats on Lake Bracciano; the Feast of Sant'Antonio Abate (17 January) with the "focarone" bonfire on the beach.

Yes, in summer there are rentals in Trevignano, Bracciano and Anguillara. Rates from about €15/hour. Combustion engines are banned on Lake Bracciano, making it perfect for quiet water sports.

The Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano (15 min by car, ticket €10), the Etruscan Museum of Trevignano (free entry), Anguillara Sabazia, the UNESCO Etruscan necropolises of Cerveteri and Tarquinia, Rome 30 minutes away, Viterbo 40.

The ideal season runs May to October. June and September are perfect for tranquillity and mild weather. July-August are the liveliest but most crowded months. Winter has its own charm: long sunsets, quiet villages, dinners by the fire.
